ASD Workshop 1

Intelligent Gaming and Life Skills

Families struggling with excessive gaming need to get on the same page. We need to maximize quality gaming and real life engagement while minimizing harm.

Who is this workshop for? This program is designed for neurodiverse gamers and their families. It's a good fit for families where our gamer requires more support in group settings. It is designed for gamers on the autism spectrum, who might need more support than what our standard programs have the capacity for. This program has a modified format. It is most suitable for families where our gamer is 10-25 years old. Neurodiverse gamers are welcome to attend any other workshops or services, but neurotypical gamers won't be joining this workshop.

Workshop 1 - Understanding Gamer Motivations

It begins with a 1 hour Zoom call for parents, giving them the chance to connect and share experiences while preparing for the workshop.

The workshop runs from approximately 10am to 4pm and includes:

  1. Education that justifies to a gamer why they may actually want to play more intelligently
  2. Insight into what really motivates gamers to play
  3. Healthy gaming strategies that gamers believe in
  4. Social gaming (VR, Nintendo Switch, or PC)
    • If choosing an online program, these are the required games: (all free)
      • Rocket League (PC, XBOX, PS4, Switch)
      • Among us (PC, mobile phone)
      • Acron: Attack of the Squirrels (Mobile and VR)
      • Minecraft (Java version, optional)
  5. Parent coaching session and goal setting starting at 3pm
  6. Workbooks for reflection and consolidating learning
  7. Goal Setting with the aim of finding more fulfillment in real life
  8. Flexibility to bring extra support workers to suit different needs
  9. A mentor/gamer ratio of 1:5 where mentors are experienced in this field or are neurodiverse themselves.
Workshop 1 goes hand-in-hand with Workshop 2 - Intelligent Gaming and Life Skills
For reference, the cost of a workshop would get you approximately 2 sessions with a psychologist (who may not understand gamers yet.)
